TransPennine Express: Data & Information

TransPennine Express (TPE), owned by First Group, operates the TransPennine Express franchise. It runs regional and inter-city rail services between the major cities and towns of Northern England and Scotland.
The franchise operates almost all its services to and through Manchester covering three main routes. The service provides rail links for major towns and cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
The franchise operates across the West Coast Main Line, Huddersfield Line, East Coast Main Line and part of the Tees Valley line.
In July 2003, the TransPennine franchise was awarded to a joint venture between First Group and Keolis, and the services operated by Arriva Trains Northern and First North Western were transferred to First TransPennine Express on 1st February 2004.
On 11th November 2007, the services from Manchester to Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central via the West Coast Main Line formerly operated by Virgin CrossCountry were transferred to First TransPennine Express.
In June 2014 the DfT confirmed two separate franchises in the north of England, one providing Intercity rail services and a second providing local rail services.
At the time proposals were made to transfer services including York to Scarborough and Doncaster to Cleethorpes services to the Northern franchise and transfer the Nottingham to Liverpool portion of the Norwich to Liverpool service operated by East Midlands Trains to the TransPennine franchise.
In August 2014, the Department for Transport announced First Group, Keolis/Go-Ahead and Stagecoach had been shortlisted to bid for the next franchise.
On 9th December 2015, First Group was awarded the franchise in its own right with TransPennine Express taking over on 1st April 2016 running until 31st March 2023, with an option to extend for two years.
The company remains First TransPennine Express, but has branded the services as TransPennine Express.
As part of a recasting of the franchise map by the Department for Transport, services from Manchester Airport to Blackpool North; Manchester Airport to Barrow-in-Furness; and Oxenholme Lake District to Windermere were transferred to the Northern franchise on 1st April 2016.
