Arriva Trains Northern: Data & Information

Northern Spirit, owned by MTL Group, had operated passenger trains in Yorkshire and the North East of England before the MTL Group ran into financial difficulty.
The company was taken over by Arriva in February 2000, and the Regional Railways North East franchise was renamed 'Arriva Trains Northern' in April 2001.
Arriva Trains Northern operated a mix of long distance regional services and local urban & rural passenger services in the North of England, including the Transpennine Express.
On 1st February 2004 the Transpennine Express service became a separate franchise operated by First Group plc. Arriva Trains Northern remaining services were lost when in December 2004 its franchise was taken over by Northern Rail.
