5th January 1997 – 31st March 2004
Created from BR’s Regional Railways unit upon privatisation, the Inter City Great Eastern franchise commenced operation on 5th January 1997 and was won by Anglia Railways Train Services Ltd, owned by GB Railways.
GB Railways was subsequently acquired by First Group on 14th August 2003.
Between 5th January 1997 and 31st March 2004, Anglia Railways operated mainline trains to East Anglia out of London Liverpool Street, as well as a number of local rail services in East Anglia itself.
The franchise was merged into the new Greater Anglia franchise on 31st March 2004 and the following day (1st April 2004) the Anglian franchise was controversially lost and transferred to London Eastern Railway Ltd, which was a subsidiary of the National Express Group.
The new franchise was initially branded 'One' but was subsequently rebranded as 'National Express East Anglia'.
