Mendip Rail: (1993 – Present)
Mendip Rail Ltd is a joint venture composed of the rail-operation divisions of Aggregate Industries (formerly Foster Yeoman) & Hanson Aggregates (formerly ARC).
Hanson ARC and Foster Yeoman founded Mendip Rail in 1993 in order to better manage their fleet availability. The assets are still owned by the parent companies with the staff being seconded to Mendip Rail.
Mendip Rail operates aggregate trains from the Foster Yeoman quarry at Torr Works and Hanson’s Whatley Quarry, both located in the Mendip Hills in South-West England, to London and South-East England utilising four Class 59/0 diesel locomotives owned by Aggregate Industries and four Class 59/1 locomotives owned by Hanson. Services are operated in partnership with Freightliner, utilising Mendip Rail's eight locomotives as well as six additional Class 59/2 locomotives.
DB Cargo had previously operated the Class 59/2’s in a similar arrangement but they were handed over to Freightliner along with the Mendip Rail contract on 3rd November 2019.
