The 1717 Littlehampton/1620 Southampton-London Victoria service formed of 422/3 (4-BIG),421/4 (4-CIG), 421/3 (4-CIG) 2260+1865+1709 overtakes class 421/3 (4-CIG) 1705 forming the 1738 Littlehampton-London Victoria just outside Gatwick Airport on 26/05/1992.
The Southampton portion having run via Cosham, Havant & Chichester to Worthing where it attached to the Littlehampton portion. Due to being around 15 minutes late the 1717 departure from Littlehampton is overtaking the later 1738 departure as it has run along the South Coast to Hove before heading north via Haywards Heath & Three Bridges whereas the 1738, although an all stations stopper, ran directly north via Horsham & Three Bridges.
